Whether you are a crafts master or something of a novice, making your own Christmas wreath is simple if you just follow a few essential steps.
In our guide on how to make a Christmas wreath, we show you how to create something beautiful and personal for your front door or table.
Step 1: Select your base
Good wreaths start with an easy-to use ring. The most eco-friendly is the wire ring that is sturdy, functional and can be used year after year. A strong wire can then be wrapped around your ring to secure a base layer of moss for added moisture and durability to your wreath.
Step 2: Choose your materials
When choosing materials, think about your theme and the overall look you want to create. For example, for a natural look with subtle tones, select items such as apples, oranges, cinnamon sticks, pinecones, pumpkins and baubles.
You will probably need more plant material than you initially think – a well-packed wreath gives a fantastic finished appearance.
If materials from your garden are in short supply, you can find all manner of foliage and extras at your local Hillier Garden Centre. We will be happy to help!
Step 3: When creating your wreath, think ‘chicken feet’
When using a wire ring, begin by layering your sections of fir in a chicken feet position overlapping one another to create full coverage on the moss. After you have placed your first two piece of fir, work round the ring in an anti clockwise fashion and as best you can, maintain the same slight angle all the way around. You can vary the size of your sprigs that you place next to each other for extra interest.
Step 4: Add hard accessories
When it comes to the extra decorative touches, there really are no limits to what you can choose to decorate. Biodegradable items such as oranges, apples and limes always work well. Secure with a wire through the items and fasten around your wreath by tightening the wire through the fir and moss at the back of the ring. Compact items like fir cones or baubles produce solid focal points and should be wired in the same manner as your fruits. Large bows and scented materials, like cinnamon stick tied in threes with hessian ribbon, are also fantastic additions.
Once you have the decorations in place, you can wind lights around the front to add that extra glow of festiveness. Try to situate the lights where the colours of your hard accessories can be highlighted but not so much that you lose the impact of the radiance.
You can find plenty of inspiration from any of our Christmas Decorating styles. For a Traditional style, focus on the rich colour palette of reds and golds; for the Jewel Style, include deep blue and gold touches and a hint of winter wonderland with the Winter Morning Style.
Step 5: Hang proudly from your front door or place in the centre of your table
